OIL MALLEE COMPANY MOVES TO GIVE STRENGTH TO THE INDUSTRY

The Oil Mallee Company will now manage the seedling ordering, growing and distribution system to help put the industry on a more secure footing.

Farmers managing the Oil Mallee Association felt vulnerable to a significant disaster in the industry. 5 million seedlings represents a turnover of almost $2 million per year. Seedling production in nurseries could not be insured.

The steady enquiry from investment companies considering large scale mallee plantings, has also meant the industry had to be ready to deal with single orders of upwards of 5 million seedlings.

To this end, it was decided that the Oil Mallee Company was better placed to manage the ordering and seedling production, as in the event of problems arising, it is backed by its shareholders.

The company also has interests with other strategic partners. They are keen to access oil mallee products including:

Activated carbon - used commonly in the water filtration and mining industries.

Eucalyptus oil - biodegradable, to be used as an industrial solvent.

Renewable energy - biomass combustion to make 'green energy' sought by power companies.

Carbon credits - sequestered carbon stored in the mallee lignotuber.

Chairman and Executive Director of the Oil Mallee Company, Syd Shea, said that with the company now managing the seedling pipeline, the industry was in a strong position.

"The oil mallee industry is now seen by potential strategic partners to be managed by a business focused company, operating under the same set of rules as they do," he said.

"The fact that the company is managing the seedling pipeline, will have little impact at the farm gate - it will be 'business as usual'. The contact personnel, Region Managers and on- ground support will remain the same in most instances," he concluded.
