A Brief Profile of Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc.

The Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc. has been serving the power needs of the Kansai area since its establishment in 1951. In 2001 the Company celebrated its 50th Anniversary in operation, and during that half-century it has been a total supplier in developing and operating its own power plants, securing diversified resources for the power generation, and delivering the generated power with optimum efficiency and reliability to customers throughout the region.

Geographically, Kansai's service area covers nearly 29,000 km2. In the fiscal year ended March 31, 2002, Kansai's annual power sales reached 139.8 billion kWh - almost equal to the national power needs of Sweden - and operating revenues reached 2,518 billion Japanese yen.

As an energy company whose role in society is to supply clean electric power, Kansai has always striven to its utmost to preserve the environment, with particular attention being paid to global environmental problem such as global warming, ozone layer depletion and acid rain which are the demands of the age.

In this regard, Kansai has implemented various projects abroad to mitigate and absorb CO2; These projects include tropical rainforest restoration technology development project in Indonesia, mangrove forest restoration technology development project in Thailand, open-cut coal mine rehabilitation project in Australia, power plant thermal efficiency improvement/recovery project through enhanced operational management in Thailand, and so on.
