Southern Region Report -

John Hall, Newdegate

Hopefully by the time this is printed we will have had some rain and will be busy planting trees!? I was pleased to see that previous years plantings are still healthy after bugs, sheep and dry seasons.

We had an interesting and informative field day at Newdegate Research Station last Friday 6th July.
Speakers at the day included Jason Menzies (OMC), Ross Ramm (AgWest) and Tim Emmott (Greening Australia). Special thanks must go to Rochelle Strahn (Newdegate CLC) for organising the day.

Steve Blyth, Katanning

The word is, "Don’t panic, the rains are coming!"

250,000 seedlings will be planted in the region this year. Already some properties have planted with the rest waiting for a little more rain. I remember delivering the first seedlings in July last year.

The nurseries that will supply the seedlings for the region are in no hurry to get rid of them just yet, so there is no pressure on you to plant into the dry.

They would however like to see all seedlings picked up or delivered no later than August 15th.

If you feel you will need more time please contact me to discuss.

It’s never too early to place orders for next year.

I have already received orders which just goes to show that oil mallees are being seen as a real potential and that the attitude is changing to one of "I have to plant trees, so why not oil mallees?"

I will be attending the meeting in Pingrup on August 7th at which we will be discussing options for the Kent Shire/Avon Valley and look forward to talking to you about oil mallees and how they can fit in to your agroforestry designs.

Hoping we have a lot more rain.
